Donation of GPS systems to the SAPS by Talk Radio 702

Media Statement

MEDIA STATEMENT FROM THE OFFICE OF THE NATIONAL COMMISSIONER OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE SERVICE

Pretoria 2008-02-27

Top management of the South African Police Service lauds Talk Radio 702 for their initiative, driven by Mr John Robbie on his Tuesday morning show, which resulted in 734 GPS systems being pledged for donation to the SAPS.

Although the SAPS endeavours to equip all our members with the resources necessary to effectively fight crime, every initiative by the private sector which raises the communities awareness and which would assist even one SAPS member is appreciated and welcomed.

The Garmin GPS systems which will be handed over to the SAPS shortly by 702 will indeed contribute greatly to our efforts to ensure that every man, woman and child is safe in his or her home, community and work environment.

Our sincere thanks to all the businesses and organizations which rose to the challenge and responded to 702’s call to play a positive role in reducing crime levels in this country. We will ensure that this equipment, so generously donated, will be put to the best possible use in order to secure and protect our clients, the law-abiding citizens.

A special thanks to both Mr Yusuf Abramjee for his enthusiasm and for always making himself available to assist the SAPS in a constructive manner and to Mr John Robbie for his passionate contribution to public safety. They lead by example.
