Basic Training
Becoming a Police Official
New police recruits undergo a basic training programme. This
programme has the following three phases:
Phase 1: Basic training and tactical policing programme.
This programme is six months long. It is presented at the SAPS
training colleges in Pretoria, Oudtshoorn, Graaff-Reinet, Bisho,
Chatsworth and Philippi.
Phase 2: Field training as student constable in uniform.
During the next six months of training, students undergo field
training as student constables in uniform. They work in
Community Service Centres for the first 12 weeks. Thereafter
they work outside Community Service Centres.
Phase 3: In-service training. After students have
finished the basic training, they undergo in-service training
for 12 months. After that, they can be appointed in the SAPS.
When police officials have finished the three phases of basic
training, they must work in the police service for at least four
years. Police officials are appointed on Salary Level 4. They
also receive all the fringe benefits that go along with this
salary level.

selected to join specialized units. They undergo more training

selected.
