The child protection investigator is responsible for child
related crimes (persons below the age of 18 years) that involves
aspects like rape, sodomy, indecent assault, child pornography,
kidnapping, abduction, runaways and missing children. Sex crimes
committed by a person above the age of 18 is the responsibility
of the investigators of sex crime unit. They deal with
investigations regarding rape, incest and indecent assault.
Family violence crimes like domestic violence is handled by the
investigators of Family violence unit.
What are the minimum requirements to
become a Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offence
Investigator?
The individual must have at least two years functional
experience in a Detective environment and have a driver’s
licence (code 08 or higher). He/she must be willing to undergo
polygraph, psychos and security clearance vetting whenever
required to do so. He/she must also be computer literate and be
familiar with the Criminal Administration System, the
circulation and other mainframe systems in use by the South
African Police Service.
Training:
Individuals undergo Training in investigative skills,
fundamental human rights (including children’s rights), legal
requirements regarding specific crimes and specific instructions
regarding policing of crimes against children.
Where can you be stationed?
Members are stationed at any of the three Sub-Units: Family
Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units
countrywide.
