Career Quest
The Stock Theft Investigator is responsible for the
investigation of crimes related to the theft of stock, wild
games, poultry (only big quantities) and related enquiries. The
investigator visits stock-fairs, farms, butcheries, abattoirs,
hide dealers, stock pounds and speculators. Members of this unit
use different methods of transport like four wheel drive
vehicles, motorcycles or horses during their investigations and
to guard borders when a tendency of stock theft is determined.
This unit is also responsible for tracing the owner of lost and
found stock.
What are the minimum requirements to
become a Stock Theft Investigator?
He/she must have at least two year functional experience in a
detective environment, be willing to undergo a polygraph,
psychometric test and/ or security clearance vetting and have
knowledge of animals. You must be computer literate and be
familiar with the CAS (Criminal Administration System), the
circulation system and other mainframe systems in use by the
South African Police Service.
Training:
The following courses are presented:
Stock Theft, ISIS (Information System of Identification of
Suspects), CAS (Criminal Administration System) and Circulation
Course. Further training includes The Information Course and a
Course on Handling of Crime Scene Course.
Where can you be stationed?
After completing the above courses, a member can be appointed
as a stock theft detective in any of the Stock Theft Units
across the country.
