EXPLOSIVES EXPERT
(Bomb Technicians)

The Bomb Technicians render an effective bomb disposal service, utilize computer systems for bomb disposal/ explosive control and render a service to users and suppliers of explosives. He/she must also do inspection and disposal of any item or device which is suspected of being an explosive device. Such items are referred to as suspicious parcels., and are treated as potential explosive devices until proven otherwise. Bomb Technicians are dispatched to all reports of a bomb threat and are trained to carry out bomb sweeps of places where such a threat has been received. They are trained to deal with any incident relating to the unlawful use of any chemical or biological agent against any person or place within the Republic of South Africa.

What are the minimum requirements to become a Bomb Technician?

You must have at least one year experience after basic police training. If you suffer from a chronic fear of heights or confined spaces you will be unable to function properly in the explosive units. You must have no criminal record, be willing to undergo a psychometric and physical evaluation, be prepared to be interviewed and have a valid code 08 drivers’ licence.

Training:

The following courses are presented:
Basic Bomb Technician; Explosive Control; Bomb Data systems; Commercial Explosive systems; Robotics; Chemical, Biological and Radio-Active Countermeasure; Post-Blast Investigation Course and An Electronics Course. Further training includes a course in the tactical application of explosive and a refresher course for bomb technician.

Where can you be stationed?

Bomb disposal units in the South African Police Service.
