ENDANGERED SPECIES PROTECTION INVESTIGATOR

The Endangered Species Protection Investigator is involved with Investigation that relates to the hunting, importation, exploration, possession, buying of, selling of endangered species or any products of such species, the illegal dealing in culture-historical artifacts. The activities of the Endangered Species Protection Unit are subdivided into four fields of investigation: Covert Investigation, Strategic and tactical investigation, Special Investigation and Syndicate Investigation.

What are the minimum requirements to become an Endangered Species Protection Investigator?

The prospective incumbent must have at least two years functional experience in a detective environment, be familiar with the CAS (Criminal Administration System), circulation and other mainframe systems in use by the South African Police Service. He/ she must be prepared to undergo a six month probation period, be prepared to work with potentially dangerous animals like snakes and have knowledge of plants.

Training:

The following courses are presented: The ESPU (Endangered Species Protection Unit) Course, A Photography Course, A Surveillance and Counter Surveillance Course, A Course in Interrogation Techniques and 4x4 Course. Further training includes courses in for example CYCAD identification.
