FORENSIC ANALYST
(Questioned Documents)

The forensic examiners are responsible for the forensic examination of any disputed aspect concerning documents, thus, the processing of crime scenes for questioned documents related evidence. They perform the individualization of handwriting, signatures, typescript, printed matter and stamped impressions. They identify forgeries, erasures and additions and perform the deciphering of obscured writing and indentations. They determine the authenticity of banknotes, perform examinations concerning writing instruments, ink and other media used in committing offences. They document the outcome of the questioned document examination and present expert evidence in court. They are also involved in the maintenance of a computer database in respect of anonymous letters and syndicate related documents. They conduct research in the field of questioned document related issues.

What are the minimum requirements to become a Forensic Analyst (Questioned Documents)?

The individual must have undergone Basic Police Training, have a recognized B-Degree/ National Diploma and experience as detective with extensive knowledge of fraud related cases.

Training:

Training in this unit follows an established three year programme. Additional External training - Secret Service, S. A Printing College, S. A Banknote Company is also presented.

Where can you be stationed?

Forensic Analysts (Questioned Documents) are stationed at Forensic Science Laboratories of South African Police Service: Detective Services.
