Forensic Psychologists are responsible for analyzing crime
scenes, photographs, statements, autopsy reports, forensic
evidence and other related evidence. They advice investigators
at crime scenes on how to approach or proceed with the
investigation. They also advice investigators about what to look
for during house searching (collateral evidence). They profile
possible offenders in unsolved cases where the use of standard
investigation techniques have not proved successful. They advice
investigators on the type of interviewing techniques to be used
and provide assistance on an ad- hoc basis with the
investigation and interviewing of serial murderers and rapists.
What are the minimum requirements to
become a Forensic Psychologist?
The individual must have a valid driver’s licence and, at
least 2 years functional experience in a detective environment
and have successfully undergone a basic detective course. Be
willing to undergo a polygraph, psychometric test and/ or
security clearance vetting. Be computer literate and be familiar
with the Crime Administration System, circulation system and
other mainframe systems in use by the South African Police
Service. Be fluent in at least 2 of the official languages of
which one must be English.
Training:
Individuals undergo training, such as, serious and violent
crime, crime scene management, forensic, illegal firearm
investigation and psychological investigators courses.
Where can you be stationed?
Forensic Psychologists can be stationed in the South African
Police Service: Detective Services.
