Musicians may appear in various roles namely composers,
performers or conductors. The work of musicians varies,
depending on their field of specialization. They may play
musical instruments, sing, write musical compositions or conduct
instrumental or vocal performances.
South African Police Service musicians play musical
instruments in a South African Police Service Band and they
practice individual talents such as performing musical
compositions, accompanying parades and entertaining audiences.
They render concert or marching band services which include the
playing of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments as well as
instrumentation combinations.
The South African Police Service Band is led by the
Bandmaster.
What are the minimum requirements to
become a Musician?
Persons intending to take up music as a career must have
musical talent. A good ear for music and rhythm as well as
enthusiasm and dedication are essential.
Persons wishing to join the South African Police Service Band
usually do not need specific music qualifications, but should be
able to play an instrument and read music. An audition is
necessary for admission.
Musicians who enter the South African Police Service do so as
a learner musician. The selection requirement includes a
practical evaluation to assess musical potential and this is
done by a Music Board. Thereafter audition and examination
boards determine the level the musician is placed on which
depends on the outcome of a practical evaluation.
To become a bandmaster one has to have a musical
qualification and a licenciate in military band conducting.
Training:
In-service training is provided and musicians must maintain
the required standard of proficiency set for playing and
instrument.
Where can you be stationed?
Musicians in the South African Police Service perform in the
South African Police Service Bands in all provinces that is part
of the South African Police Service Communication and Liaison
Services.
