Promotions
The principles for promotion are:
- A promotion/career path up to the level of Senior
Superintendent/Deputy Director (salary level 12).
- Levels/ranks cannot be skipped.
- Personnel who qualify have to apply and compete with their
peers for advertised posts.
- Uniform requirements for promotion for all occupational
classes.
- Personnel have to be in all respects suitable for
promotion.
- Only personnel who received at least a rating of
satisfactory in terms of their performance may be considered
for promotion.
- The requirements for promotion differ from level to level.
Monetary and Non-Monetary Awards
To recognize deeds of bravery or outstanding/meritorious
services, members may be considered for the following types of
awards:
- South African Police Service Gold Cross for Bravery
- South African Police Service Silver Cross for Bravery
- South African Police Service Gold Medal for Outstanding
Services (Assistant Commissioner or higher)
- South African Police Service Silver Medal for Outstanding
Services (any rank up to Director)
- South African Police Service Commendation Medal
Employees may also be considered for a Certificate of
Commendation by the Minister for Safety and Security or the
National Commissioner and the National Commissioner may,
together with such a certificate also award a cash amount to an
employee.
Members who have served for specific periods and who have
displayed irreproachable character and exemplary conduct may be
considered for the following medals:
- The South African Police Service Forty Year Loyal Service
Medal
- The South African Police Service Thirty Year Loyal Service
Medal
- The South African Police Service Twenty Year Loyal Service
Medal
- The South African Police Service Ten Year Loyal Service
Medal
Public Service Act employees are awarded for long-service
rendered:
- 20 Years service - a certificate by the Minister for
Safety and Security
- 30 Years service - a certificate by the Minister for
Safety and Security plus a cash amount.
