Security and Protection Services
Security and Protection Services of the SAPS provides
physical security to very important persons (VIPs) according to
the degree of threat they are exposed to. These VIPs include the
President of South Africa, former presidents, cabinet ministers,
the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of National Parliament,
provincial premiers and members of the executive councils (MECs),
the Zulu King and foreign dignitaries. Security and Protection
Services will eventually be responsible for the physical
security of certain national institutions or installations,
namely National Parliament, the Presidency, the Provincial
Parliaments, ports of entry and railways.
Static protection officers perform security services
at venues that fall under the control of Security and Protection
Services. They exercise access control, carry out supplementary
duties and operate control rooms. Physical security advisers
assess the state of physical security at identified sites, and
make recommendations regarding the minimum standards of physical
security that should be implemented and upheld.
Counter-assault team operators provide specialized support
to operational functions in cases where standard operational
procedures and resources will not ward off and/or neutralize
possible or observable threats. Risk management personnel
make sure that operational personnel are kept informed of
existing and possible threats during the performance of their
duties. Close protection officers are responsible for the
physical protection of identified VIPs while they travel from
one venue to another. Planning officers consult with
persons responsible for organizing events and draw up security
plans. Technical support officers are responsible for the
distribution of technical equipment during operations to improve
the quality of service.
