The World Police and Fire Games 2005 (WPFG), Quebéc,
Canada from 25 June to 5 July 2005
The
World Police & Fire Games (WPFG) is the world championships for police
officers, customs officials, correctional officials and firefighters
covering approximately sixty (60) events. All eligible persons in
these professions are welcome to participate, without having to
qualify. This means that the competitions cover everything from top
class athletes to keep fit buffs. The WPFG attract participants from
all over the world and this is also one of the ideas behind the
competition - to give police officers and firefighters the opportunity
to meet and establish contacts with their colleagues from other
countries. And also to promote physical fitness among the law
enforcement and firefighting community. The 1997 games in Calgary
where SAPS teams took part, had about 9 000 participants and 12 000
participants were expected to take part in these games in Stockholm in
1999. The following are the previous host countries:
- 1985 San José USA
- 1987 San Diego USA
- 1989 Vancouver Canada
- 1991 Memphis USA
- 1993 Colorado Springs USA
- 1995 Melbourne Australia
- 1997 Calgary Canada
- 1999 Stockholm Sweden
- 2001 Indianapolis USA
- 2003 Barcelona Spain
- 2005 Québec Canada
The WPFG also aims to provide a forum for improving International
co-operation among different role players around the world.
The SAPS National Team who is going to participate at the
above-mentioned Games consists of the following sporting codes - names
were already identified and entries were sent to the WPFG Federation:
- Soccer
- Tennis
- Golf
- Mountain Bike
- Road Cycling
- Service Rifle (Combat Rifle)
- Large Bore
- Athletics
- Cross Country
- ½ Marathon
- Pistol Shooting
- Badminton
- Body Building
- Karate
- Rugby 7-a-side
- Squash
- Beach Volleyball
- Indoor Volleyball
The following WPFG will be hosted in Adelaide, Australia during
June/July 2007.
Sports people are encouraged to start being serious about the
participation in sport. Normally the achievements of the previous 3
years of a specific sportsman/woman is being taken into account when
the different sports committees get together to nominate a team.
Should permission be granted to send a team to Australia in 2007,
Netball will most probably also be added to the list of sporting codes
for the Australia team. Unfortunately Québec, Canada does not host
Netball. That is why we did not choose a team.
