Firearms:
The Firearms Control Act, 2000
(Act No 60 of 2000)

Deadline Extended
New Deadlines
The following revised renewal periods, according to birth dates, are applicable to a person who wishes to renew his or her firearm licence, permit or authorization:
Birthday Renewal period
1 January to 31 March 1 January 2005 to 31 March 2006
1 April to 30 June 1 January 2006 to 31 March 2007
1 July to 30 September 1 January 2007 to 31 March 2008
1 October to 31 December 1 January 2008 to 31 March 2009
 
Unwanted Firearms
Any person who no longer wishes to possess any licenced firearm(s) may dispose of such firearm(s) in any one of the following ways:
  1. Sell the firearm to a licenced dealer;
  2. Sell the firearm to another person who must successfully obtain a licence to possess the particular firearm;
  3. Have the firearm deactivated by a licenced gunsmith after approval has been
    received from the South African Police Service;
  4. Hand the firearm(s) to the South African Police Service for destruction;
  5. Have the firearm permanently exported; or
  6. Sell the firearm to a legal entity.
 
Voluntary Handing in of Firearms to the South African Police Service
Step 1:
Take the following with you to the relevant Designated Firearms Officer or designated member at the police station:
  • your original official identity document;
  • your original firearm licence(s), permit(s) or authorization(s) for the firearm(s) that will be handed to the SAPS;
  • the applicable firearm(s) and/or ammunition that will be handed to the SAPS

Step 2:
You will be required to complete the relevant sections(s) of the SAPS 522(a)(Surrendering of firearm item(s)) form.

Step 3:
The Designated Firearms Officer or a designated member at the police station will take possession of the firearm(s) and/or ammunition and the relevant licence(s), permit(s), or authorization(s).

Step 4:
Ensure that you receive an acknowledgment of receipt as proof that the firearm(s) and/or ammunition and the relevant licence(s), permit(s), or authorization(s) have been handed to the SAPS.

Step 5:
The firearm(s) will be deregistered from the SAPS Firearms Register System.

Step 6:
The firearm(s) will be destroyed by the SAPS.

 
No cost is incurred by a person who voluntarily hand in a firearm and/or ammunition to the South African Police Service for destruction. Any person who destroys or alters a firearm will be committing an offence and may be criminally charged.
