Prevent becoming a victim of Date Rape

  • Date rape is the sexual abuse of one partner by the other in a dating relationship
  • Do not allow another person to touch you in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable - by addressing the person firmly make it clear that the behaviour is unacceptable
  • Do not leave a social event with someone you have just met or don't know
  • You have the right to say NO!
  • REMEMBER: Most women are raped by someone they know.

What to do if someone you know rapes you:

  • Find a safe place, immediately.
  • Inform the first person that you trust about the incident.
  • Go to the nearest police station to lay a charge. Make sure that you report the rape within 72 hours. It is advisable to take a friend or family member with you.
  • If you were drunk at the time of the rape, do not hesitate in reporting the matter, being drunk is not a crime, rape is.
  • Although you may not want to lay a charge, make sure you receive the morning-after pill to prevent pregnancy, anti-retroviral treat to prevent HIV infection and antibiotics to prevent contracting an STD. All these treatments must be received from the doctor within 72 hours.
  • Go for counselling.
