The Khayelitsha Vasbyt Club has extended a challenge to all SAPS
members to participate in the next Pollsmoor Peninsula Vasbyt walk that
will take place on 3 to 4 December 2004. A Vasbyt is a unique endurance
race, where competitors have to walk a distance of 70 km to 75 km over
two days.
Each Vasbyt team has six walkers. The team can consists of six males
or six females or you may have three women and three men in a team. To
qualify for silver or gold, all team members have to complete the race.
Two rules apply at all times: team members are not allowed to walk more
than 50 m apart from each other and no-one may run under any
circumstance.
Insp L Schoonwinkel of the Khayelitsa Vasbyt team said: “A Vasbyt is
an unbelievable experience, stretching your body and your mind to new
limits. When you finish a Vasbyt, you have covered more than just the
distance, you have conquered yourself.”
There are annually six endurance competitions. They are the Diaz
Vasbyt in May, the Port Shepstone Vasbyt in July, the Ladysmith (Cape)
Vasbyt in August, the Two Nations Maluti Vasbyt in the Free State and
the Peninsula Pollsmoor Vasbyt in December. For more information please

Information and photos provided by Communication Services: Springs
SAPS, Area East Rand
Compiled by Mariëtte van Jaarsveld
Project Green Clean was launched in celebration of Arbor Week, on 3
September 2004, at Vukucinge Primary School, Slovo Park.
The day started off with a puppet show presented by personnel from
the SAPS in Springs. Thereafter, Mr Errol Britz of the Chanmél
Garden Centre Animal and Bird Farm, told the children about the
important role of trees and the environment. Mr Britz also sponsored
12 trees that were planted in the vicinity of Vukucinge Primary.
After the tree planting, everybody helped to clean the area by
picking up the refuse and putting it in refuse bags provided by the
SAPS in Springs.
The hard work was rewarded with demonstrations by the Police
Emergency Services. Flares, thunder flashes and smoke grenades were
fired off and different firearms were displayed. To the delight of
the children, Captain Crime Stop arrived in his police van with
flashing blue lights on the beat of “Mandoza”.
But even, Captain Crime Stop couldn’t compete with the dogs of the
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan K-9 Unit. They stole the hearts of the
children with their breathtaking performances.
After a day packed with educational entertainment, leaving every one
a bit exhausted, Project Green Clean, the SAPS Springs’ Social Crime
Prevention Project was declared a major success.
