Do not release goods even if a Bank cheque
is presented, without checking with your Bank

Do not cross Cash cheques

Do not advertise your Banking details

Include your account number when making
account payments

Use crossings accordingly

Familiarise yourself with the different
Banks cheque layouts

Use alternative methods of payment such as
Electronic payments

Bank statements and chequebooks should be
locked away

Reconcile your cheques against your Bank
statement
LOOK OUT FOR

Check the payee, amount in words and figures
carefully for alterations

Be on the look out for stamps that are
placed over areas that could conceal alterations
-
Spelling mistakes on the printed areas of
the cheques such as the drawer’s details and branch name
-
Tampering on the MICR Code line – black
shaded areas
-
Be suspicious if a cheque appears faded, as
chemicals could have been used to remove information
-
Shaky signatures could indicate that the
signature was traced
