SAPS Dogs and their Functions

Patrol Dogs

Rottweiler, German Shepherds and Malinois are some of the breeds most commonly trained for this purpose.

These dogs search for suspects in buildings and dense bushes of serious crime scenes.  They search for and retrieve small objects on crime scenes which can be used as evidence in a court of law.  They also follow the tracks and apprehend fleeing suspects.

Tracker Dogs

The Doberman/Bloodhound crossbreed are one specific breed trained in tracking scent paths made by criminals.

Sheepdogs

Border Collies are trained to assist in the investigation of stock theft.

Search and rescue dogs

Breeds such as Malinois are used to find missing persons resulting in prevention of injury or death.  These dogs are used in search-and-rescue operations and have searched for survivors after major earthquakes in Iran and India.

Protected species investigation dogs

Both the Border Collie and German Shepherd breeds are trained to react and indicate on the scene of abalone, grayfish and different protected species thus preventing the illegal smuggling of such species.

Fire investigation dogs

The Border Collie is renowned for indicating acceleration in containers and buildings.  Searching for acceleration amongst mixed substances i.e 3 micro liters of petrol, paraffin, diesel, methylated spirits and thinners.

Narcotic dogs

Detection of narcotics such as cocaine, heroin and dagga in containers, buildings, vehicles and open areas are the specialty of the German Shepherds, Malinois, Cocker and Springer Spaniels and Border Collies.

Explosive dogs

The German Shepherd may be utilized to detect, search for and indicate hidden explosives, firearms and ammunition in containers, buildings, vehicles and at ports of entry.
