SAPS Dog School
SAPS Dogs and their Functions
Rottweiler, German Shepherds and Malinois are some of the
breeds most commonly trained for this purpose.
These dogs search for suspects in buildings and dense bushes
of serious crime scenes. They search for and retrieve small
objects on crime scenes which can be used as evidence in a court
of law. They also follow the tracks and apprehend fleeing
suspects.
The Doberman/Bloodhound crossbreed are one specific breed
trained in tracking scent paths made by criminals.
Border Collies are trained to assist in the investigation of
stock theft.
Breeds such as Malinois are used to find missing persons
resulting in prevention of injury or death. These dogs are used
in search-and-rescue operations and have searched for survivors
after major earthquakes in Iran and India.
Both the Border Collie and German Shepherd breeds are trained
to react and indicate on the scene of abalone, grayfish and
different protected species thus preventing the illegal
smuggling of such species.
The Border Collie is renowned for indicating acceleration in
containers and buildings. Searching for acceleration amongst
mixed substances i.e 3 micro liters of petrol, paraffin, diesel,
methylated spirits and thinners.
Detection of narcotics such as cocaine, heroin and dagga in
containers, buildings, vehicles and open areas are the specialty
of the German Shepherds, Malinois, Cocker and Springer Spaniels
and Border Collies.
The German Shepherd may be utilized to detect, search for and
indicate hidden explosives, firearms and ammunition in
containers, buildings, vehicles and at ports of entry.
