SUCCESSES
It is impossible and unfair to attempt to summarize the successes achieved by members of the Family Violence, Child
Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, due to for example:
-
In most of the cases, the investigating officers have to establish a trust relationship before victims are willing to reveal
all the detail of an incident. This can take hours, days or weeks.
-
The outcome of cases can never reflect the support rendered to the victims, their families and/or significant others.
They often call the investigating officers for advice after the conclusion of the criminal case.
-
It is not always in the best interest of a victim to institute criminal court proceedings due to the personal circumstances
of victims, e.g. emotional state (trauma), age, family circumstances, etc.
-
Cases are sometimes withdrawn due to factors such as intimidation, memory span of victim (can no longer remember
all the facts), etc
-
Bail hearings can take up to full five days.
-
Prosecutors usually consult with the victim and witnesses before the court date. The investigating officers usually
have to transport the people and be present during the consultations.
-
Investigating officers usually have to prepare the victim and/or the witnesses for the court proceedings
-
Speedy trails depend on the courts.
