On 27 January 1995 the South African Police Service Act, 1995
(Act No 68 of 1995) was promulgated.
On 27 January 2005 the SAPS celebrated its 10th Anniversary as
a service to the South African Democracy. As of that year 27 January
is celebrated as National Police Day.
National Police Days are also celebrated in countries across the
world, such as Russia, the USA, Singapore, England, Wales and Australia,
annually giving recognition to the services rendered by their respective
policing agencies.
The National Police Day in South Africa has been declared to signify
the date and anniversary of the establishment of the SAPS, to give
recognition to the service rendered by our members and to honour
those who have paid with their lives to protect and serve all people
in South Africa.
This day also indicates to local and international communities
that the SAPS is honoured and respected for the law and order and
the safety and security it provides for South Africa and its people.
It shows that the SAPS has the full support of Government.
SAPS are of the view that by investing in its human capital
crime can be further reduced. This year planned events will show
appreciation for outstanding and loyal performance by police
officials and civilian members of the SAPS. Accordingly SAPS during
this period will place emphasis on focusing on the well-being of
employees.
SAPS will also reflect on its achievements in 2011/2012 and what
still needs to be done to create safer environments for all people
in South Africa.
Let us together squeeze crime to zero and build a safer South
Africa for all.
