22. The Safe Keeping of Another Person's Firearm
22.1
Section 8(1) of the Firearms and Ammunition Act, 1969 (Act No 75 of 1969), regulates the safe keeping of a firearm that belongs to another person.
22.2
Only a person who is licensed to possess a firearm may store a firearm that belongs to another person.
22.3
The person who stores the firearm must have written permission of the license holder stating the following information:
22.3.1 The address where the firearm will be stored
22.3.2 The name, ID number and address of owner
22.3.3 The full details of the firearm(s)
22.3.4 The period for which it may be stored
22.4 The notice must be signed by a member of the SAPS.
22.5
The licensed owner alone may transport it to and from the person where it will be stored. It may, however, also be transported by a courier that has a valid permit in terms of Regulation 31 to transport firearms.
22.6
Some dealers in firearms provide a service to store firearms at a fee.
