The Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Sibusiso Mkhwanazi, was born in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. He is 38 years old and joined the SAPS in 1993.
CURRENT POSITION
Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi is the current Acting National Commissioner of the SAPS.
ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS
Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi holds a national diploma, as well as a B Tech Degree in Policing. His other qualifications include the following:

Position last held/career/membership/other activities
Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi’s initial deployment was in Public Order Policing where he managed the Public Order Police. He was later appointment as Head of the elite unit in the police, the Special Task Force, in 2005. His core responsibilities were to manage all responsibilities and assigned operations within and outside the Republic of South Africa. These included counteracting volatile hostage situations on land, sea and air; providing specialised high-risk operational policing support in counteracting high-profile contact crimes; protection duties, as well as the serving of high-risk warrants and the performance of specialised search-and-recovery operations.
He was appointed as the Component Head: Specialised Operations at a level of Major General on 1 May 2011. His duties included managing the Air Wing, all specialised operations, Public Order Policing, the Tactical Response Team, the National Intervention Unit, the Special Task Force, the Tracking Team, Mobile Operations, as well as Cross-Border Operations.
