KWAZULU-NATAL: On Monday, 04 November 2024, Edward Mthokozisi Nkosi (54) was sentenced to five (5) years imprisonment in the Richards Bay Regional court for fraud, with the sentence suspended for five years on the condition that he is not found guilty of fraud during the period of suspension. Nkosi was also sentenced to 36 months imprisonment or an R20,000-00 fine for fraud.
Nkosi's fraudulent activities spanned from 2012 to 2017 during his employment as an educator at Sobethu Primary School, where he had submitted a fraudulent diploma certificate from Rand Afrikaans University (RAU) to obtain his position. As a result of the fraudulent diploma, Nkosi’s salary was adjusted, causing the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education to suffer an actual prejudice of R161 750-25 in overpaid salary.
A case of fraud was opened at Pongola police station in March 2019 and subsequently assigned to the Hawks members from the Durban Serious Commercial Crime Investigation for further probe. After conducting a thorough investigation, Nkosi was arrested and charged with fraud. He appeared in court on several occasions until his sentencing on 4 November 2024, where he was found guilty and received the aforementioned sentence.
The KwaZulu-Natal’s Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Major General Lesetja Senona welcomed the sentence and commended the investigating Team for the good work. He further said that this case highlights the importance of background checks and the need for vigilance in the fight against fraud and corruption in the education sector.
