The South African Police Service (SAPS) Tshwane Central Cluster is receiving daily reports of cell phone snatching/robberies. Cell phone users listening to music, texting, talking or otherwise absorbed in their phones are making themselves a prime target for criminals. Cell phone robberies are usually a crime of opportunity. Criminals focus on opportunities that cell phone users are giving them, whether they are walking on the street, sitting in a restaurant or waiting for a fast food order or a taxi to arrive. Technology is taking away people’s focus and awareness of what is going on around them. Several reports are received from people who were robbed from their cell phones while they were texting or waiting for a taxi through a cell phone app. Others are robbed while they are using their cell phones in free Wi-Fi areas.
