WESTERN CAPE – In our pursuit to eliminate criminal elements in the Manenberg and Khayelitsha communities, police members apprehended seven suspects in separate incidents.

Yesterday (2020-07-16) at around 07:55, members of the Anti-Gang Unit deployed within the Manenberg policing precinct were conducting crime prevention duties within the hot spot area of Red River Crescent, Manenberg when they noticed a suspicious male who upon seeing them proceeded to run. The members gave chase and managed to corner the suspect. They searched him and discovered a 9mm pistol with several rounds of ammunition in his possession.

In a separate incident, at around 10:15, members, acting on information received, descended upon a residential address in Red River Crescent, Manenberg and found a man at the residence. The members conducted a search of the premises and discovered a container with several rounds of ammunition. In addition, a Remington pistol was found and the suspect was subsequently arrested.

At approximately 16:00, members proceeded with patrols in the Red River Crescent area when they spotted suspicious males standing nearby. As the members approached, a suspect attempted to flee to evade arrest. He also attempted to hide something inside a toy, however members noticed and, upon inspecting the toy, they retrieved a 7.65 pistol and several rounds of ammunition and arrested the suspect.

The members continued with patrols in Red River Crescent when, at around 20:20, they saw a suspicious male running. They pursued the suspect and upon searching him, they found several rounds of ammunition in his possession. The suspect was subsequently arrested.

Once charged, all four male suspects, aged between 40 and 50, will appear in the Athlone Magistrates Court for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

In an unrelated incident, members attached to Khayelitsha SAPS successfully clamped down on the illegal sale of cigarettes and the illegal transportation of alcohol with the arrest of three suspects in two separate cases.

Yesterday, members approached and pulled over a suspicious vehicle that was travelling on Sulani Drive, Site B, Khayelitsha. Upon conducting a search, they discovered alcohol and two male suspects, aged 35 and 49, were arrested.

Meanwhile, members acted on information received and arrived at an address in Sulani Drive, Khayelitsha. Upon searching the premises, they confiscated cigarettes and arrested the suspect, a 29 year old male, for selling these items.

All three suspects will appear soon in the Khayelitsha Magistrates' Court and will be charged under the Disaster Management Act.
