It is alleged that SAPS Tongaat members Warrant Officer M Cele and Sergeant S Dlamini received a complaint of a stabbing at Lungelani Informal Settlement, La Mercy. On arrival at the scene of crime the Police found a 32-year-old male with two stab wounds on his chest. Police made inquiries at the scene and it was established that the victim was stabbed by a known male. On further investigation they noticed that another 36-year-old male was also stabbed on the chest by the same suspect. An investigation revealed that the two victims were stabbed due to an argument over a bottle of alcohol. Paramedics arrived at the scene and declared a 32-year-old victim deceased and the second injured victim was taken to hospital to receive treatment.

Police were informed that the suspect fled the scene, the description of the suspect  was given to the police and one of the witnesses pointed out the direction that the suspect fled; which was towards the sugar cane fields . The Police then followed up on the leads in order to arrest the suspect hence the Police went into the sugar cane field to search for the suspect. Whilst searching; they found him hiding inside the sugar cane field not far from the scene of crime.

He was then arrested and was also found in possession of a murder weapon which was the knife that was used to commit the crime. He was placed under arrest and the knife was seized from his possession. The suspect was also taken to hospital under police guard and is expected to appear before the Magistrates' Court soon.

A Murder and attempted Murder cases were opened and the matter is being investigated by detectives. The body was taken to the Phoenix Government mortuary for a post mortem to be held.

SAPS Tongaat Colonel Santha Moodley applauded Warrant Officer M Cele and Sergeant S Dlamini for their swift response that led to the arrest of the suspect. This arrest will send a strong message to the perpetrators of crime that crime does not pay off and that the full weight of the law shall come down hard on perpetrators of such senseless acts.

We are appealing to our community to refrain from liquor abuse. Drinking alcohol may make you behave differently or become violent and you may do things that you would never do when you are sober. Sometimes drunk people fight with other people; including their partners and children. Many people could become involved in crime when they drink because alcohol clouds a person’s judgment. Liquor abuse is a choice and it affects everyone and can also shatter lives.  Think before you drink, and discourage the abuse of alcohol. The suspect is 23-years-old.
