PRETORIA - The Hawks' Serious Corruption Investigation team has arrested two Department of Home Affairs officials, one of whom just recently retired and two foreign nationals for alleged corruption in connection with RSA fraudulently acquired citizenship.

The fraudulent citizenship in question was allegedly acquired in 1996 at the Johannesburg Home Affairs offices by one of the arrested Zimbabwean suspects aged 45.

Over the years when the man tried to cross the border into his native country he would run into trouble with authorities from that side as he was deemed to be a foreigner. He then embarked on a quest to relinguish RSA citizenship in order to reclaim his original identity.

The man then allegedly made contact with his 40-year-old compatriot who also illegally acquired RSA citizenship to introduce him to officials who can 'help' him. The two officials aged 52 and 61 respectively were then identified, approached, and undertook to change his status provided they were paid a R7 500 gratification.

A suspicious attempt was then picked up on the system at the Home Affairs Nigel offices on 02 February 2018. One of the officials had allegedly used a junior staff member's log on details in order to action the change on the system.

The Hawks were alerted and initiated an investigation which has resulted in the arrest of all four suspects. They have been charged for fraud, corruption and contravention of the Immigration Act. The case is set to be heard at Pretoria Specialized Commercial Crime Court on Thursday.
