POLOKWANE : The South African Police Service in Maake outside Tzaneen jointly with the SAPS Mopani District Tracking Team have yesterday, on 03 September 2020 swiftly arrested three suspects who were part of the group that allegedly robbed two businesses at Khujwana and Lephephana villages in the Ritavi and Maake Policing areas respectively and recovered a firearm with ammunition and suspected stolen properties.

The SAPS Maake crime prevention members were alerted about these suspects who were driving in a white VW Golf 7 and immediately followed it up.

A group of about five suspects earlier on, had allegedly stormed into a Supermarket at Khujwana village wearing balaclavas and armed with firearms. They then threatened the customers and robbed the shop owner cigarettes, cash amount of money and cellphones. Subsequently, they drove away in a white VW Golf 7 without registration numbers. These suspects also robbed a Supermarket at Lephephane cigarettes, airtime vouchers and cash amount of money.

The alleged vehicle was spotted along Tlhabine village. Police tried to pull it off the road but it sped off. The members started chasing the vehicle and in the process, they got a backup from the SAPS Mopani District Tracking Team. The suspects started shooting at these Teams of members who then retaliated and  the suspects ultimately abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot.

In the process of this shooting, one Police vehicle was damaged but there were no injuries or fatalities.

One suspect was arrested shortly after the chase. Police then confiscated the VW Golf 7 with the cigarettes and undisclosed amount of money believed to be some of the properties robbed during the two incidents.

The other suspect was later cornered and arrested inside a certain BMW vehicle together with the driver. During the arrest, Police recovered an unlicensed firearm with ammunition. The  vehicle was also confiscated.

The arrested suspects aged between 35 and 40 are expected to appear before the Lenyenye and Nkowankowa magistrate's  court soon facing charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen properties and two counts of business robberies.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service  in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba hailed the Saps Mopani District for their consistent zero tolerance approach towards criminals involved in serious and violent crimes.
