NORTHERN CAPE – Warrant Officer Eugene Marshall Grace (43), appeared briefly at Springbok Magistrates' Court on Tuesday facing a charge of theft.

It is alleged that Grace was part of a covert operation last month whereby an amount of R50 000 was withdrawn from the state account to be used in the sting.  During the sting operation, only R20 000 was used and the remainder as expected was supposed to be returned.

However, Grace booked off sick and disappeared with the remaining R30 000 and used it for his own personal gain.  Various attempts were made to trace to effect until a decision was taken to open a theft case was opened against him on Monday.

A tracing team led by the Hawk's Serious Organised Crime Investigation team was immediately formulated to search for Grace.  The team managed to track and arrest him in and around Springbok  and during his arrest about R11 000 was seized.

Warrant Officer Grace is out on a warning and the case is postponed to 15 September 2020 for further investigation.
