POTCHEFSTROOM: The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena urges members of the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. This follows an incident of apparent mob justice which were reported over the weekend in Wolmaransstad.

On Sunday, 27 September 2020, at around 03:00 in the morning police were called to a scene in Extension 17, in the informal settlement in Wolmaransstad where it was alleged that two suspects were trying to commit house breaking into one of the shacks, the owner was not at his house.  Community members saw the incident and assaulted and killed the suspects. A 18-year-old suspect died on the scene and a 28-year-old suspect was transported to hospital with serious injuries. He died later in the hospital. A assault(mob justice) and murder case were opened.

Subsequent to the incident, the Provincial Commissioner sternly warned that taking the law into one’s hands is an illegal act which cannot be condoned. Furthermore, he urged the public to stay calm and to report criminal acts to the police rather than taking the law into their own hands as that is unlawful and can land one into trouble with the law. Rather work together with the police in exposing and bringing to book those who committed this appalling act of criminality.
