TONGAAT: 06 October 2020 On Monday 2020-10-05, a 52-year-old male Richard Zulu was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, four years for possession of unlicensed firearm and one year for possession of unlicensed ammunition in the Verulam Regional Court.

On Thursday 2019-01-03, SAPS Tongaat attended to a complaint of murder at Ndlovu’s Farm, Hilltop, Carter’s Hill. When the Police arrived at the scene a witness pointed out a 33-year-old female deceased who was lying on a pool of blood. Police noticed that the deceased had sustained multiple shot wounds on the neck. The deceased was certified dead by paramedics and the body was taken to Phoenix Government Mortuary for a post-mortem to be held.

Police were informed that a 52-year-old male; Richard Zulu was the boyfriend of the deceased. Police further learned that Richard Zulu shot and killed the 33-year-old deceased female who was reportedly his girlfriend during an argument and he then turned the gun on himself.   The accused was employed as a Security Guard and the firearm used to commit a crime was a rifle belonging to the security company he was working for. The accused was arrested and placed under police guard for a month in hospital due to the gunshot wound which he sustained on his left jaw when he attempted to commit suicide.

The docket was assigned to Detective Sergeant Siphindile Mazwayi, through her experience and dedication she investigated the case and managed to secure a conviction in this case. When the accused appeared in court his bail was successfully opposed and he remained in custody until conviction and sentencing. Due to the long hours of intensive investigation by the Detectives an excellent conviction was secured.

SAPS Tongaat Station Commander Colonel Santha Moodley praised Detective Sergeant Siphindile Mazwayi and her partner Detective Warrant Officer Richard Naidoo for the manner in which they conducted the investigation that led to the successful conviction of the perpetrator. This sentence will serve as a strong warning to the perpetrators of crime. We as the SAPS are doing everything in our power to ensure that all the perpetrators of crime are put behind bars.
