Police efforts to ensure perpetrators of crime are brought to book resulted to the arrest of nine suspects during tracing operations conducted yesterday and today in the Nyanga precinct.

The suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition, hijacking, armed robbery, attempted kidnapping and assaults with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Five suspects are appearing in Athlone and Philippi Magistrates' Courts  today. 

Three suspects aged  24, 28 and 34 are due in Athlone Magistrate Court following their arrest on Wednesday in possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition and hijacked vehicles. The duo aged 24 and 28 were arrested in possession of a prohibited firearm and a hijacked vehicle in Zenzile Street in Lusaka. Police acted on information of a vehicle which was hijacked in Elsies River and spotted the vehicle at the address. As the police were approaching the house the suspects tried to flee but were caught. One was caught in possession of the keys of the vehicle.

A 9 mm pistol with its serial number filed off and nine live rounds were recovered inside the house. A driver’s licence, cards and other items belonging to the complainant were also found during the arrest. Four suspects including two women who were also inside the premises were arrested but the women were released after questioning.

The 34-year-old suspect is also appearing in court following his arrest in possession of a hijacked vehicle in Makholwa Street in New Crossroads. the vehicle was reportedly hijacked in Khayelitsha.

The other two aged 33 and 39 are due n Philippi Magistrate Court today facing charges of assaults with intent to do grievous bodily harm on incidents they committed in Nyanga area.

The remaining four suspects aged 20, 30 and 37 are expected to appear in Athlone Magistrate Court on Monday, 26 October 2020.

The 20-year-old suspectwas arrested on a case of murder and attempted murder he committed on Sunday last week in Thabo Mbeki. The deceased was stabbed trying to stop a fight between his girlfriend and the suspect. He was rushed for medical treatment but later succumbed to the injuries he sustained.

Another suspect 30 was arrested on attempted kidnapping. The suspect snatched a 2-year-old child in Browns Farm. The mother of the child was inside the house when some children came to tell her that her the baby was taken by an unknown man. The family rushed outside and luckily found the unknown man carrying the child unharmed. Further investigation led to his arrest in the early hours of today. Meanwhile a 37-year-old was nabbed on armed robbery and attempted murder case he committed in Crossroads.

Members were applauded for their efforts in ensuring those who continue to break the law are brought to book.
