Mfuleni SAPS - Alcohol abuse and firearm violence are some of the major crime generators in the Mfuleni policing area. In some cases the abuse of alcohol has led to rape, assault, robbery, murder, and other serious crimes. A number of serious crimes like murder, armed-and-house robbery cases are committed, mostly with prohibited firearms. With the festive season fast approaching and the “16 Days of no violence against women and children” in mind, the Station Commander, Brigadier Fana Dlamini and the crime prevention unit executed several successful search warrants over the past weekend (27-29 November 2020).

Yesterday morning (Sunday, 29 November 2020) around 10:00 the members received information from an anonymous caller about drugs being sold at a house in Sir Bedivere Street, Camelot. The members obtained a search warrant for the address, and during their search they found cocaine and other drugs and arrested a 23-year-old male. While the members were still busy searching the house, the suspect received a suspicious phone call from someone who was on his way to him.

The police members immediately executed a plan of action to hide themselves and their vehicles. The moment the four male suspects arrived to buy drugs, the members cornered them and searched the black Chrysler vehicle which they were driving. The SAPS members found a prohibited firearm in the vehicle and also established that the vehicle was hi-jacked earlier this year in the Mfuleni area.

The 23 year old male suspect was arrested for possession of drugs, while the other four (4) suspects aged between 26 and 37 years old, were arrested for possession of a hi-jacked vehicle and a prohibited firearm. All the suspects appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrates' Court yesterday morning, 01 December 2020. The 23 year old suspect remained in custody, while the hi-jacking case was transferred to the Bellville Vehicle Theft Unit for further investigation, and to determine if they can be linked with other serious cases.

In an unrelated incident which took place on Sunday (29 November 2020) evening around 23:25 in Ou Plaas Street, Wesbank, SAPS members on patrol noticed a person throwing an object in a yard. When the members got hold of the suspect, they went back to the spot where he threw the object and recovered a prohibited firearm and ammunition. The 27-year-old male suspect was arrested and appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrates' Court yesterday morning, 01 December 2020.

The members also confiscated large quantity of liquor and arrested two people in separate incidents during alcohol crackdown operations in Fairdale and Mfuleni for dealing in liquor without a valid license. They both appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrates' Court.

The Station Commander of Mfuleni SAPS, Brigadier Fana Dlamini, applauded the members for their vigilance and hard work in serving and protecting the community.
