POLOKWANE - The intensification of Safer Festive Season Operations continues to yield positive results as fourteen suspects, including a 38-year-old Police Sergeant, were arrested during the operations that were conducted since Monday 14 December 2020 until this morning.

The police sergeant was arrested by members of the Limpopo Highway Patrol Unit (LHP) after he apparently failed to stop when he was pulled over next to Boyne along the R71 road in Mankweng policing area, driving a Volkswagen vehicle. A car chase ensued and shots were allegedly fired from the said vehicle towards the police who returned fire, injuring the police member. The other unknown number of suspects got out of the vehicle and fled.

The vehicle was searched and some sachets of drugs, a service pistol ,03 magazines with ammunition and were found and confiscated.

The member is under police guard in hospital where he was admitted. He will face charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of drugs, reckless and negligent handling of a firearm and reckless and negligent driving.

The other suspects were arrested on charges of business robbery, possession of suspected stolen properties, possession of house breaking implements, stock theft, illegal hunting, perjury, possession of fraudulent documents, dealing in drugs, possession of illicit cigarettes

The following items were seized:

• Plasma TV sets •microwaves• printers• music systems, illicit cigarettes, various drugs etc.

The operations are being conducted at various locations across the province and have already led to the arrest of several thousand’s suspects since the start of the festive season period.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Limpopo Major General Jan Scheepers has applauded the members for their endless efforts in fighting crime and ensuring the safety for all the citizens and visitors this festive season.

The suspects aged between 25 and 43 are expected to appear in various Magistrates' Courts soon.
