POLICE IN PORT ELIZABETH TIGHTENING THEIR GRIP ON CRIMINALS

Port Elizabeth:  In the last 24 hours police in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro  have notched up several arrests and detained suspects for serious crimes committed within the metro.

On Wednesday afternoon, 6/01, the Detective Trio Task Team members arrested three suspects for an alleged business robbery which took place in December 2020 in Central.

It is alleged that on 17 December 2020 at about 16:40 , a clothing store in Govan Mbeki Street was robbed at gunpoint by several males. Cash, cellphones and  clothing were taken.

At about 15:30 on 6/01, the Detective Trio Task Team members with the assistance of SAPS Humewood Crime Prevention members followed up on information received of three of the suspects at the taxi rank in Govan Mbeki Street. The suspects aged between 30-36 years old were arrested  and detained on a charge of business robbery. They will appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrates’ court on Friday, 8/01.

Also on 6/01 at about 11:30, PE Flying Squad members followed up on information that suspects were on their way to  commit a  crime in Algoa Park. The suspected vehicle a Nissan Almera was spotted in Bethelsdorp Road and when they saw the police vehicle, one male jumped from the moving vehicle and ran through open field. As he ran, he dropped a 9mm pistol. He was arrested in Ysterhout Street  in Algoa Park. The serial number of the firearm was filed off.

He is detained on a charge of possession of prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.  He is expected to appear in court soon.

PE K9 unit members arrested a 27 year old housebreaking suspect  late last night, 6/01. It is alleged that at about 23:25, the members responded to a complaint of a housebreaking in progress at a business premises in Govan Mbeki Street in Central. On arrival, members found the front door of premises damaged. Patrol dog, Bart was released to search for possible suspects inside the building. Bart successfully flushed out one suspect. He is detained on a charge of housebreaking.  He will appear in court soon.

Detective officers across the metro conducted a special operation on Wednesday evening (6/01; 21:00)  until this morning (7/01, 05:00) where they succeeded in arresting 38 wanted suspects. The suspects were detained on various charges ranging from among others drunken driving, house robbery, theft and possession of drugs.

Acting Mount Road Cluster Commander, Brig Thandiswa Kupiso reiterated that these successes are attributed to high visibility  and persistent efforts by police in Nelson Mandela Bay metro.
