ARSON SUSPECT ARRESTED: UGU DISTRICT PORT SHEPSTONE

In an effort to track down offenders wanted for serious crimes committed within Ugu, the District Operational Command Centre swooped on a suspect at Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape on 6 January 2021. It is alleged that on 1 December 2020, the 43-year-old man had an argument with his girlfriend (29) at Mathulini Location in Mtwalume.

The victim was assaulted in the house, but she managed to escape during the ordeal. When she returned to the house, she discovered that the house was burnt to the ground. All her belongings were burnt in the fire. A case of Arson was opened at Hibberdene police station. The preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had fled the area and his whereabouts were unknown.

During an intensive investigation by a dedicated team of detectives from Ugu District Operational Command Centre, the information led the members to Kwa-Nxaghu area in Lusikisiki where the suspect was arrested. He appeared at Umzumbe Magistrates' Court on 8 January 2021. He was remanded in police custody and will appear on 19 January 2021 for a bail application.

Ugu District Commissioner, Major General Sethenya Nxamagele commended the members for their handling of the investigation to bring the perpetrator to book.
