Philippi-East: Happy Birthday to me! I had so much fun spending Khumality time with all me friends.

On Friday, 29 January 2016, the Captain Khumalo project was launched at Mzamomhle Primary School in Brown’s Farm, Nyanga in the Western Cape. The awareness program was attended by 90 Grade 1 learners.

The Captain Khumalo program is designed to educate childcare and primary-aged school children between three and 12 years of age on a range of safety themes, and to encourage them to turn to the police for help and advice.

Captain Khumalo is a ‘trusted’ character that addresses several safety issues, primarily driven by a crime prevention approach.

The program is all about teaching children how to ‘Stay OK’ – how they can make the right choices, recognizing that there are consequences associated with the decisions we make. This also provides them with a level of awareness of appropriate safety behaviors to prevent them becoming a victim of crime, or perpetrator of crime.

Captain Khumalo is not an authoritarian figure; he is assuring and engaging.

Captain Khumalo visited 58 primary schools and 8 preschools from 2016 till 2020 in the Western Cape and Gauteng. The program was attended by 19 179 learners of 427 classes.
