KWADUKUZA FCS UNIT SECURES THREE TERMS OF LIFE IMPRISONMENT

DURBAN: 4 February 2021 – Determination by the KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit detectives produced excellent results when they secured three terms of life imprisonment for rape, 45 years imprisonment for rape, five years imprisonment for burglary and 12 months imprisonment for theft. The six accused were convicted and sentenced in various courts in the province on 27 and 29 January 2021.   

On 3 June 2019 at 13:30, a nine-year-old girl from Mona area in Ndwedwe was with her cousin when he raped her. The cousin was caught in the act and was arrested at the scene by Ndwedwe police who then transferred the docket to the KwaDukuza FCS Unit for further investigation. The 26-year-old cousin appeared in the Verulam Regional Court numerous times until he was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Msawenkosi Gcumisa (23) appeared in the Verulam Regional Court on 27 January for raping a 73-year-old woman and was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for rape and five years imprisonment for burglary. On 25 February 2019 at 17:00, an elderly woman was at her place of residence in Ndwedwe taking a shower when she noticed that the accused had broken into her home. While shaken by the accused’s presence, the accused pushed the victim into the bedroom and raped her before fleeing the scene. The case was investigated by KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit  who worked tireless to locate the accused who was finally arrested and charged for rape and burglary. The accused made several court appearance until he was convicted and sentenced.

A 24-year-old lady from Mjojo area in Ndwedwe was on her way home on 11 January 2017, when she met an unknown man who informed her that he was a prophet and will help heal her since she was sick. The accused later introduce himself as prophet Thamsanqa Ngubane (26). The victim trusted the accused and took him to her room where she instructed her to take off her clothes. The victim alleged that she lost consciousness and when she woke up the accused was busy raping her. She opened a case of rape at Ndwedwe police. The case was investigated by KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit. The police managed to trace Ngubane, arrest and charged him for rape. He appeared in the Verulam Regional Court on 27 January 2021 and was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.

On 29 January 2021, KwaDukuza Regional Court sentenced Siyabonga Buthelezi (21) to life imprisonment for raping an 83-year-old granny. The victim alleged that she was sleeping at her home at Ntshawini area in KwaDukuza on 2 November 2018 at 22:00, when Buthelezi entered her house, strangled and raped her. The victim reported the matter to the KwaDukuza police station and the docket was transferred to KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for investigation. The accused was arrested and appeared in court where he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Four children were at their home 18 November 2017, at Shakaville, playing when a known man armed with a knife threatened them and raped a five-year-old year-old girl. When the mother returned home, she noticed that something was wrong and questioned the children who then informed her that Thamsanqa Mpanza came into their home and raped their sister. A case was opened at the KwaDukuza police station who arrested the accused. Mpanza appeared in the KwaDukuza Regional Court on 29 January 2021 and was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape.        

Phovile Sikeni (51) was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for raping a 13-year-old girl. The victim alleged that on 29 October 2019 at 20:00, the accused called the victim to his house at Shakashead to help transfer money for his child. The young girl assisted the accused and when she wanted to leave, the accused refused to let her go. he overpowered and raped her. The accused threatened and instructed her not to tell anyone of what transpired.  The victim rushed home and informed her family who then opened a case at the Umhlali police station for investigation. Sikeni was arrested for rape and appeared in the KwaDukuza Regional Court on 29 January 2021, where he was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.
