Philippi-East: After being sidelined for the past 11 months due to COVID-19, Captain Khumalo is returning to active duty.

Captain Khumalo is returning to child-care centres and schools across Cape Town from today, 17 February, to resume his mission of educating children on safety issues, after being sidelined from all school lessons and attendance of community events due to social distancing restrictions.

First appearing on SABC 3 in April 2020 in a show called KIDS News, Captain Khumalo has delivered safety messages to more than 420 classrooms since 2016 and taught more than 19,000 children. Captain Khumalo has been a visible figure in South Africa for more five years, building a good relationship between young people and police, helping the South African Police Service (SAPS) achieve their mission of ‘ ensuring a safer South Africa’ through early childhood education.

Captain Khumalo’s handler, Captain Granville Meyer hasn’t been off duty while not being at schools.

The Captain Khumalo program is designed for children aged between three and 12 years of age and teaches protective behaviours, decision making and consequences, and to encourage them to turn to the police for help and advice.
