Police determination and efforts to root out criminality in the Nyanga precinct resulted in remarkable successes.

Earlier today a 30-year-old suspect was arrested for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. Sector Team members were on patrol in Zwelitsha Drive, Nyanga when they noticed a suspect who was talking with the driver of a vehicle who, when he saw police approaching the vehicle started running and threw away a firearm. The suspect was caught by police and detained for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

Meanwhile Detective members attached to Serious and Violent Crimes Unit made more arrests while following up on armed robbery cases committed last week in Govan Mbeki Road in Browns Farm. A 36-year-old suspect was appearing in Athlone Magistrates' Court following his arrest last week on Thursday for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition, possession of an imitation firearm including two armed robbery cases which occurred on the same day in Govan Mbeki bridge in Browns Nyanga. His bail application was effectively opposed

During the investigation it was discovered  that the suspect and six others were previously arrested in a Nyanga case of truck jacking which occurred in June last year in Browns Farm. Five of these suspects were appearing in Wynberg Magistrates' Court yesterday. Four aged between 22 and 37 were arrested just after appearing in court.

They were arrested in connection with the Govan Mbeki Road armed robberies. The suspects were targeting motorists during traffic congestion, pointing them with firearms demanding valuables.  One of the four suspects was also arrested on another Nyanga carjacking case of May last year. Further investigations will be conducted in terms of profiling and linkages of suspects.

The same members also arrested two suspects aged 37 and 39 on a charge of house robbery and assault. The suspects had allegedly robbed a Plasma at a house on Monday last week in Situlo Road in Crossroads and loaded it in a Toyota Avanza which was waiting with four more suspects. They then drove away. Members followed up on information and arrested the suspects at about 02:45 today.

The two suspect’s addresses were visited in Khayelitsha and Phola Park in Gugulethu. At the Phola Park address police recovered three different live rounds of ammunition and a firearm holster.

While the members were walking in the area they pounced on a suspect who was busy stripping two Big Boy Motorcycles. When questioned about ownership the suspect could not explain. The owner was contacted and he informed the police that the motorcycles were stolen last night in the area of Wynberg.

The motorcycles were seized and the 23-year-old was arrested in possession of tools he was using to strip the motorcycles.

In an unrelated matter a 59-year-old grandfather was also arrested for an alleged rape of a 13-year-old in Browns Farm.

The suspects aged between 22 and 37 are expected to appear in Athlone Magistrates' Court facing charges of armed robberies, house robberies and possession of stolen property. The 59-year-old would appear in Wynberg Magistrates' Court facing rape charges.

The members were applauded for their vigilance, determination and sterling investigation which led to these arrests.
