POTCHEFSTROOM: The North West Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Dintletse Molefe welcomed three years direct imprisonment recently handed to Thabang Louis Monyane by the Schweizer-Reneke Regional Court for corruption.

Monyane, who is a former Constable, was sentenced following an incident reported in April 2015 in Bloemhof. At the time of the incident, Monyane was on patrol when he stopped a vehicle and accused the driver of being under the influence of alcohol. He arrested the driver, but demanded R1000.00 bribary. The driver was taken home after he paid R500.00.  It was reported that Monyane went back to the driver’s place the following day to demand the outstanding R500.00, but was arrested during a controlled police action (trap) and was found in possession of the money he took from the driver.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner commended all role players including the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) for conducting an excellent investigation that led to the sentencing of the accused as part of rooting out corrupt employees who tarnish the image of the Service. She further said that corrupt activities within the Service will not be tolerated and that the sentence will definitely send out a strong warning that crime does not pay and that those who commit it, will be dealt with harshly irrespective of who they are.
