Eleven suspects are expected to appear in court following their arrest yesterday (2021-05-19) on rape, hijacking and robbery charges committed in Nyanga and Samora Machel.

Two suspects aged 21, 24 and 53 were arrested yesterday for alleged rape cases they have committed in Browns Farm Samora Machel. The 21 year old was arrested on a 2019 case while the 24-year-old was arrested after he raped a 14-year-old girl last week in Woodbaai Informal Settlement in Browns Farm.

The 53-year-old suspect was arrested for the alleged rape of his step daughter in the area of Samora Machel. The victim alleges the stepfather started sexually assaulting her in June 2019. The suspect took advantage of the victim every time her mother was at work. The victim reported the matter on Wednesday last week after she discovered she was pregnant.

Eight other suspects aged between 16 and 34 were arrested in Browns Farm after police followed up on information on suspects who were involved in two hijacking cases of e-hailing drivers on Saturday and Tuesday in Browns Farm. Police received.

In one incident which occurred on Saturday the suspects (three females and a male) sent a request to be picked up on from Vangate Mall to Browns Farm area promising the driver that their sister would pay when they reach Sagoloda Street in Browns Farm. The driver took the clients but when they reached Tywaka Road he was attacked by four suspects who robbed him cash, cell phones and drove away with his vehicle. His vehicle was the following day in another street in Browns Farm.

The same suspects allegedly hijacked another e-hailing driver on Tuesday in Tywaka Road. One suspect was found in possession of a bag full with documents of the driver.

Three suspects are due to appear in Wynberg Magistrates' Courts facing rape charges and the other eight in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on hijacking, robbery and possession of stolen property charges.
