Efforts to deal with incidents of hijackings bear fruit this afternoon.

Police pounced on a 32-year-old suspect at about 13:30 who with two accomplices were attempting to hijack a vehicle in Tony Yengeni Street in Browns Farm. The members attached to Browns Farm Sector Team were on patrol in the area when they spotted three suspicious men who started running when they saw police approaching.

Police chased the suspects and noticed one trying to hide a firearm into his pocket. Police cornered the suspect and recovered the firearm with no ammunition hidden in his pocket.

His two accomplices ran into a vehicle that was waiting for them not far from the crime scene and drove away with the vehicle. Police discovered the suspects were attempting to hijack a vehicle from a community but he the driver threw the car keys into a yard and the suspect’s efforts were thwarted.

Preliminary investigations reveal the driver of the getaway vehicle was going to be the buyer for the vehicle the suspects were attempting to hijack.

The 32-year-old suspect would when charged appear in Athlone Magistrates' Court for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and attempted hijacking.
