CAPE TOWN: SUSPECTS LINKED TO MURDER OF CAPE TOWN LAWYER SET TO GO ON TRIAL

Three men accused of an assassinating the top Cape Town lawyer Pete Mihalik were finally set to go on trial next year after months of delays.

The trio which include Sizwe Biyela, Nkosinathi Khumalo and Vuyile Maliti face various charges including murder, two counts of attempted murder and the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The 50-year-old lawyer then, Mihalik was gunned down on the 30 0ctober 2018 was a well-known lawyer for underworld figure.

 This occurred when he was dropping off his two children at their school at Reddam House, in Green Point. His eight year old son was wounded and hospitalised during the attack. The suspects have appeared at Western Cape High Court on Friday for their final pre-trial hearing more than two years, after their arrest.

Maliti was not in court, when his co-accused appearing at the High Court. State prosecutor, Greg Wolmarans said Biyela and Khumalo were being kept in prisons outside Cape Town for their own safety. During the trial a special arrangements will be made with Pollsmoor Prison for the safety of all the accused. It has also transpired that Maliti was already serving a sentence for a separate matter at a prison outside of the province.

The trial will now commence on the 17 May 2022.
