ILLEGAL FIREARMS TAKEN OFF THE STREETS IN MITCHELLS PLAIN

LEEUKOP STREET: TAFELSIG 

On Friday 2021-06-25 at about 09:10 Mitchells Plain SAPS members were busy attending complaints. When they were stopped by a member of the community who informed them about a shooting in Leeukop Street, Tafelsig. Upon arrival at the scene, police found an unknown male who had sustained gunshot wounds. The suspect had allegedly shot at the police, who returned fire and arrested him. Police recovered a black and silver Kuzey  A100 firearm with serial number 18k-1675.Police collected twenty eight (28) cartridges on the scene. Police arrested a 40 year old male. The suspect faces charges of unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition, attempted murder x2 and attack on police .The suspect is a gang member. He is expected to soon appear in court.

HUGUENOT STREET: TAFELSIG  

On Friday 2021-06-25 at about 08:00 Mitchells Plain Proactive members were busy with crime prevention duties in Huguenot Street, Tafelsig. When they stopped and searched a suspicious male. When searching the suspect, police found a 9mm PAK firearm with serial number RMDYC171124166 with a live round in his possession. Police arrested a 24 year old male. The suspect faces charges of unlawful possession of prohibited firearm and ammunition. The suspect is not a gang member. He is expected to soon appear in court.                                                 

C/O MOIRA AND FRANCIS STREET: TAFELSIG  

On Sunday 2021-06-27 at about 14:45 Mitchells Plain Crime Prevention Unit members were busy with crime prevention duties. When they received a complaint of a shooting at c/o Moira and Francis Street, Tafelsig. When police arrived at the scene, they saw a male with a firearm in his hand. The suspect started running away when he saw the police vehicle and threw the firearm into a yard. 

When police apprehended the suspect and took him to the where he had thrown the firearm, police saw it was a black 9mm Vector Z88 firearm, no serial number with magazine containing three (3) live rounds and one (1) round in the chamber. The suspect also had eleven (11) 9mm rounds in a white sock in his possession. Police arrested a 24 year old male. The suspect faces charges of unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition. He is expected to soon appear in court.                                                

Mitchells Plain SAPS Station Commander Brigadier Goolam commended the members for their dedication to their work. He also thanked the community for their swift response in reporting the incidents to police which enabled SAPS to respond swiftly and apprehend the suspects. He furthermore attributed the success to the growth of the community safety structures in the area who are continuing to make a positive impact in the community. Members of the community are urged to join the community safety structures to make appositive difference in their area.
