A joined operation by the members of the Carletonville Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offence Unit yielded positive results when they arrested two out of the three suspects believed to be responsible for multiple rape incidents that has been happening around the waterworks hiking spot targeting hitch hikers.

A 20-year-old victim, who is the latest victim was accosted by the trio on the 11th of July 2021 at approximately 18:30 whiles walking along the Impala road hiking spot. They allegedly dragged her to the open veld robbed her of her cell phone and money before taking turns in raping her. She was able to recognize one from the trio after he removed his face mask during the rape. She worked hand in hand with the police in tracking and tracing the one suspect.

On Sunday the 18th of July 2021 a team comprising of investigators from the unit followed information of a possible suspect at Waterworks next to the railway line after a lengthy investigation. At 12:30 am a 31-year-old suspect was arrested at his place of residence and two toy guns believed to be used to scare the victims were recovered hidden in a school back on top of the roof. He led the police to his 41-year-old accomplice in Zuurbekom. The third suspect is said to have fled to Freedom park but police continue to be on his trails. The pair will be charged and are expected to appear before the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.

The Acting Station Commander Lt Colonel Florence Zondi commended and thanked the team for their selflessness and working around the clock ensuring that the perpetrators were brought to book. “Justice will prevail, we will ensure that the pair is linked to all the Waterworks incidents.” she concluded.
