A crime prevention operation by the members of the West rand district yielded positive results when they arrested a 29-year-old male in possession of an unlicensed firearm. On the 26th of July 2021 the members were conducting stop and search operation around the informal settlement which is one of the flashpoints around Bekkersdal for illegal firearms, murders, attempted murders and robberies.

At Ramela Street, the members spotted a male person who entered one of the shacks when he notice the police. The police became curious and confronted this male person. They allegedly asked him permission to search him and the shack he was in and on his waist the members recovered a firearm. The male person could not produce a license to posses this firearm. He was placed under arrest for possession thereof.

He will be charged with possession of unlicensed firearm and is expected to appear before the Westonaria Magistrates' Court soon.

In a separate incident that occurred at approximately 20:19 in the evening, the police were called to a scene where a 40-year-old victim succumbed to his injuries after his white Toyota Hilux with registration number HV 41 PG GP was hijacked from him in Tshepe street, Bekkersdal.

It is alleged the victim parked his vehicle on the driveway to open the gate. He was accosted by unknown males who fired shots at him wounding him on his chest and arm before driving off with his vehicle. He was assisted by his brother who rushed him to the Bekkersdal clinic where he later died. A case of Hijacking and Murder is underway.
