WESTERN CAPE: Three suspects are due to appear in court this week following their arrest for the possession of a prohibited firearm, imitation firearm and ammunition as well as attack on police.
Philippi East police arrested a suspect who fired shots at the police who were on patrol last night (Sunday, 2021-07-25) in Thekwane Street in Lower Crossroads. The 26 year started firing shots from a moving vehicle and police chased the vehicle which came to a halt after it crashed. The suspect was found in possession of a firearm without a serial number and six rounds.
In Nyanga last night police arrested two suspects in Zwelitsha, Nyanga for the possession of an imitation firearm, and four rounds of ammunition. Members swiftly responded on crime intelligence information of a firearm at a residence and searched the house and recovered the mentioned items. Two suspects aged 26 and 28 were arrested.
The three suspects are due to appear in the Athlone Magistrates' Court once charged for the possession of a prohibited firearm, imitation firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.
In an unrelated matter, Delft Police members were busy conducting a Vehicle Check Point (VCP) this afternoon (Monday, 2021-07-26) at about 12:15 on the corners of Delft Main Road and Symphony Way, Delft. Upon searching a maroon and white Toyota Avanza vehicle, members found the occupant in possession of a .38 Taurus revolver with five rounds . The 40 year old occupant was arrested and detained when he could not provide a valid licence to be in possession of the mentioned firearm. Once charged the suspect is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate court on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Meanwhile members of Maitland Flying Squad responded to a shooting complaint in Manenberg last night (Sunday, 2021-07-25). The suspects ran away when they saw the police. The members searched the area where the suspects stood and found a 9mm pistol. No arrests were made. The firearm was handed in as an exhibit at Manenberg SAPS.
