POLOKWANE - The concerted efforts by the South African Police Service in Limpopo and the focussed deployment of intergrated forces on primary and secondary routes including at hotspots areas keep making significant impact. 1421 suspects aged between 18 and 45  were arrested during operations conducted from 18 July until today, on Monday 26 July 2021. Of these suspects, 312 were arrested for Contravention of DMA Covid-19 Regulations.

The other suspects were arrested for various crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, rape, sexual offences, robberies, stock theft, burglaries, possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen properties to dealing in drugs and illicit cigarettes.

▪ The fight against smuggling of illicit cigarettes received another boost when a 34 year old suspect was arrested and illicit cigarettes worth over R200 000 were recovered on Friday, 24 July 2021 at Bochum location in the Senwabarwana policing area, Capricorn District. The suspect was arrested at his house by Crime prevention members following a tip-off.

Four more suspects aged between 24 and 33 were arrested in the Sekhukhune and Waterberg Districts. In the Sekhukhune District, members of Highway Patrol Team on Tuesday 20 July 2021arrested two suspects aged 24 and 33 for dealing in drugs. The members were patrolling around Monsterlus Taxi rank at Tubatse  when they spotted a suspicious looking man. They then stopped and searched him and he was found in possession of 10 wrapped plastics containing Nyaope drugs.

The 24-year-old suspect then took the police to another suspect who was also found in possession of 2kg of dagga with an estimated street value of R10 000.The other two suspects aged 20 and 23 were arrested at Bela-Bela Old location, for possession of Nyaope drugs worth R20 000.

▪ Meanwhile, members of Highway Patrol Team were patrolling around Burgersfort when in the early hours of Monday, 26 July 2021 at about 01:00, they noticed a suspicious motor vehicle driving at a high speed along the R37 road and managed to stopped it. They searched the vehicle and found a cooler  box filled with liquor valued of R2 000. All three occupants aged between 26 and 45 failed to produce permits to be on the road during curfew hours. They were arrested for Contravention of DMA Regulations.

▪ During the operation conducted in the Vhembe District, Highway Patrol Team, Thohoyandou Crime Prevention, TRT and POPs members acted on a positive tip-off about suspects busy stripping off a motor vehicle at Tshivhungululu village. All three suspects aged between 30 and 42 were arrested at the scene. Preliminary police investigations indicated that the vehicle was stolen around Thohoyandou.

The following items were recovered: 39 927 sticks of counterfeit cigarettes, 63 dangerous weapons including knives, 07 stolen/robbed vehicles,13 firearms, 822 grams of Nyaope, 50 grams of dagga, 03 dagga plants, 1 062 137 ml liquor, 08 shebeens closed and 907 fines issued.

These operations were conducted by members derived from various Police units such as K9, Tracking Team, TRT, VCIU,  Crime Intelligence, Crime Prevention, POCC and other law enforcement agencies and stakeholders.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commends the police for the zero tolerance approach towards any form of criminality in the province and thanked the community and private sectors for their continued support in the fight against crime.

Some of the arrested suspects have started appearing in the local magistrates' court, whilst others were released on a warning to appear in court at a later stage or pay an admission of guilt fine for DMA transgressions.
