Gqeberha 11 August 2021: Persistent patrols and continuous stop and searches in gang affiliated areas in Gelvandale is bound to make criminals nervous as police officers close in on the activities.

Within 24 hours, two firearms were recovered and a wanted suspect arrested in separate incidents by SAPS Gelvandale Vispol Tracing Team members. In the first incident, on Tuesday,10/08 at about 10:30, the members received and acted on information of a known gang member in Deverill Road in Helenvale.  As soon as police entered the  road, the suspect was spotted. 

When he saw the police officers, he started to run and threw a firearm into a yard. He managed to evade arrest however the 9mm firearm and 6 rounds of ammunition were recovered. An enquiry docket was opened for investigation. The firearm was reported stolen in Bethelsdorp in October 2018.

Also on Wednesday, 11/08 at about 10:00, members were patrolling in Voissen Road, Helenvale when they noticed a group of males. Among the group, members spotted a  suspect wanted in an attempted murder case allegedly committed in May 2021.

Members chased after the fleeing suspect and apprehended him. While still restraining him, a 9mm pistol and 9 rounds of ammunition  fell from his pants. The 23 year old was detained on a charge of attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.  

He is expected to appear in  Gqeberha Magistrates’ Court soon. Both firearms will be sent to ballistics for analysis.
