On the 14th of September 2021, the Westonaria magistrate court finalized a case of reckless and negligence driving against a 53-year-old Deran Khumalo of Diepkloof Hostel in Soweto with a twenty thousand rand fine or spend twenty four months imprisonment which is wholly suspended for five years.

The incident happened on the 9th of July 2019 at approximately 19:10pm along the R93 road. The taxi driver was allegedly driving into R93 from panyapanya street Bekkersdal when he ignored the stop sign and collided with a state vehicle which was driving along the R93 road. The driver of the state vehicle escaped unharmed however the vehicle was damaged beyond repair. The taxi driver sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital where he recovered.

Inconsiderate driving is one of the contributing factor towards road crashes. Innocent lives are lost on a daily basis therefore we urge our drivers to be vigilant and extra careful when using the roads said the Station Commander Colonel Phumelele Matamela as she applaud the investigating officer Sgt Shiwe Mkone for the good investigating skills she displayed.
